The SmithGroupJJR Cultural Practice is recognized as a leading designer of museums and cultural facilities in and outside the U.S. In addition to the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the firm’s most significant projects for the Smithsonian are the National Museum of the American Indian, for which it served as lead architect.  Much of the firm’s portfolio is for emerging cultural institutions, as result of SmithGroupJJR’s approach to building consensus and listening carefully.  The firm is known for their ability to develop designs that truly work for institutions and create a lasting impression on visitors.

Project Role

SmithGroupJJR is the overall project leader, working closely with the City of Richmond and the community. SmithGroupJJR is also leading the development of the Concept Design, the physical design for the project rooted in the recommendations and guidance of the Statement of Purpose and the Visitor Experience Plan.
